Team Rainbow Rocket
Back in the old games, the team identified themselves as “Team Rocket.” Their objective is to take over the Kanto Region. To meet their goal, they must snag the precious Master Ball from Silph Co. in order to capture the most powerful Pokemon. Their efforts were thwarted by trainer Red, a young man from Pallet Town with exceptional skill in Pokemon battles.
With the advent of Ultra Sun and Moon, set years later, the team is back and assumes a new name as Team Rainbow Rocket. Not much changes in their appearance, as they remain clothed in black uniforms, though one exception is their logo, which now displays a bright rainbow. A snapshot from the trailer shows that Team Rainbow Rocket have established their new headquarters in an unknown location.

Giovanni, the Team Rainbow Rocket Boss returns
Team Rocket’s actions were directed by Boss Giovanni. He first appeared as the primary antagonist in Kanto, serving not only as Team Rocket Boss but also the Viridian City’s Gymleader. He had encountered the trainer Red when the boy reached the president’s room in Silph Co., then later fought him again in Viridian City. After his loss to trainer Red in Viridian City, he ceased all the organization’s operations by disbanding it.
During the Johto era, a couple of Team Rocket executives attempted to call Giovanni back from hiding. Unfortunately, their scheme failed when two skillful trainers fought to save the lives of all Pokemon.
Years later, the notorious Team Rainbow Rocket Boss Giovanni mysteriously returns in Ultra Sun and Moon. From the trailer, it shows him speaking to the protagonist, threatening the latter if he continues to interfere with his “plans.”

Villains and more Villains
After the reveal of Team Rainbow Rocket, more villains from previous games appear in quick succession. Mugshots of the main villains from different Pokemon games appear to challenge the Trainer, yet their reasons for doing so remain a mystery. There is no certainty whether these villains support Team Rainbow Rocket or not, but judging from the bands of rainbow colors in each of the mugshot’s background, they could be working towards the same goal.

Nobody knows the reason behind the logo change, not to mention the shift from Team Rocket to Team Rainbow Rocket. In addition, the “plans” that Team Rainbow Rocket Boss spoke of lack further detail. So far, we only know that he seems to serve as the master of Mewtwo. Judging from the revealed line in the game, he has some new tricks up his sleeve.
