Pokemon Trainer Ryuki Returns
Much like Trial Captain Mina, there is a possibility that Pokemon Trainer Ryuki returns with a bigger involvement in Pokemon Ultra Sun and Moon. This might likely also follow suit in expanding his involvement in the Trainer’s Main Story. One of the first few Trailers for Pokemon Ultra Sun and Moon, published on August 18, 2017, exposed Elite Four Ryuki who is seen talking to the Male protagonist in an unknown location.

Pokemon Trainer Ryuki Returns: Background
One of the Pokemon Sun and Moon Champion Challengers is Ryuki. His name composition roughly translates to Dragon. It is evident in the previous games that he is a Dragon-type specialist because of his roster. Moreover, his spiky costume also has the draconic flair built into it.
In the Pokemon Ultra Sun and Moon trailer he claims that he is a “star.” This is the same introduction he gave prior to challenging the Champion in Sun and Moon. This might allude to Unova’s Pokestar Studios in which case means that he may also be a fellow Unova native as Professor Burnet. However, further information is currently unkown.
Pokemon Trainer Ryuki Returns: Familiar Looking Gym
Another highlight of one of the Pokemon Sun and Moon Champion Challengers is the location. Inspecting the interior closely would show a familiar looking gym design. This could be either a nod or an actual return to the first games’ Region. The layout of the location is that of a traditional gym given the row of canisters.
To support this claim, the recent release of Virtual Console Versions of Pokemon Gold and Silver brings up a point. For one, these games introduced travelling which allows Trainers to board the bullet train back to Kanto. The location closely resembles Vermillion City’s Gym. This might mean that travelling might return to the game, similar to the second generation.

Another hint to this fact was Pokemon Sun and Moon’s post-game event where Trainer Lillie bid farewell to the team in order to visit the said Region. There were also multiple references in the previous titles, not only with the release of Pokemon Red, Blue, and Yellow for the Virtual Console but also the species found in-game. In the first games, the companion of the protagonist’s family was not the new Alolan-Meowth but the classic Kanto species. The protagonist themselves were also stated to be from immigrants from Kanto.
Pokemon Trainer Ryuki Returns: Thoughts
For now, whether this is actually Kanto or not is still up to investigation. For one it could be a Training ground for trainers owing to the NPC found at the back of the gym. If this is true, it could either be another reference to the Kanto Gym nearby Sabrina’s which rewards a Fighting-type once defeated. Another thing to consider is that this might be a deserted gym to preserve the Island Challenges mechanic.
