Prey is coming out this May 5, 2017. A self-proclaimed “scif-fi thriller,” the game is set to be a very creative first-person shooter in the vein of the Half-Life and Bioshock series. Given the excitement and fanfare, we just had to cover the game, and we’re going to pre-order it by next week. In the meantime, we’ve scoured the interwebs for Prey news.

5 Exciting Things We Learned About Prey

One of the men behind Fallout 2 and New Vegas‘s success has taken a developmental role in Prey. Chris Avellone, the co-founder of Obsidian Entertainment and former CEO.
What can we expect from Chris Avellone? Well, if you enjoyed New Vegas’ rich story, Dead Money DLC’s story and writing, and Fallout 2‘s design, you’ll enjoy whatever Avellone’s contributions to Prey exactly are.
4. Art Style hints at Bioshock-in SPACE setting; themes
While not veering wholly away from the typical Alien-style of “Industrial Horror” aesthetic, the space station, Talos I looks very, very inspired by games like Bioshock. However, instead of the Randian setting of the 2008 game, this game is strictly sci-fi horror, and tackles different themes.
3. Free-Roam, Multi-Strategic Gameplay

While the original game was quite explorative, 2017’s Prey has gameplay additions, including morphing into non-living things for camouflage and maneuvering into small entrances and the like.
Apart from transforming into a cup or a towel, you have access to a number of other neuromods. Other neuromods include psychic abilities like telekinesis or psychoshock. These provide you with a multitude of ways to dispatch the typhon, your shadowy foes on Talos-I.
2. Tinges of Lovecraftian Dread draped in an Alternate-2037
You can expect Prey to be very lovecraftian in tone.
Watch this trailer and tell me it isn’t something HP Lovecraft (or Stephen King trying to write some Lovecraft) would write:
A specific quote comes to mind:
“This is Morgan. The year is 2034. I keep having this dream. I’m just staring into the black between the stars. There’s something there. I can’t see it, but it sees me. It sees everything.”
Not only is Prey slightly Lovecraftian in nature, it is also an alternate history piece. According to the History of TranStar trailer, US President John F. Kennedy did not die in 1963, and teamed up with Soviet Russia to study the “non-terrestrials” called Typhon. His survival allegedy led to the “neo-deco” age.
The lovecraftian element also carries over to the creature design. Shadowy creatures with multiple tendrils emanating from their body, with an origin that rivals The Color Out of Space or possibly At the Mountains of Madness.
1. Dead Space Aliens meets Dishonored in SPACE Gameplay
The typhon are what headcrab and necromorph shadows would look like if they were made alive. These strange aliens were found by Russians on the Soviet satellite,
Varona, and have been the cause for significant advances in human technology and biological enhancement. They are, also, huge pains to contain.
Much like you, typhon mimics can transform into cups and other various items. In fact, this is built to be one of the more sellable aspects of the game. By pitting you in a situation where you do not know what item is an enemy or not, the game has successfully built up suspense for you.
As mentioned above, the game provides you with a number of abilities. These include mimic matter, mindjack, psychoshock, machine mind, and many more. These manipulate your surroundings and your enemies, a concept very similar to the Dishonored franchise (which Arkane studios developed).
