Origins
Gorgon, an infamous creature, lay in wait. Any man who gazed upon her eyes would instantly turn into stones. The worst part would be that there would be three sisters: Stheno, Euryale, and Medusa. These three sisters would lay in wait for their prey before staring them down. The moment they did, the man would turn into stone.
However, they weren’t always that vindictive.
So, that begs the question. Just how exactly did these three sisters become Gorgons?
Some say that it was because of the Greek goddesses. The three sisters were beautiful; some even say that their beauty rivaled those of the virgin goddesses. This comment managed to irk one of them, particularly Athena. When the youngest, Medusa, ran into her temple for protection, it did not stop Poseidon from raping her. Whether it was due to anger or spite, Athena turned Medusa into a gorgon. She ignored her wails and begs for help, condemning her to be a demon.
Some say it was due to the blood of their parents. Both represented the dangers of the sea. It didn’t help that they were also cthonic in nature. Since then, they were already doomed to look like demons.
