Origins
Also identified by his True Name “Amakusa Shirou Tokisada,” he led the Shimabara Rebellion during the Edo era spurred by the outcry of Catholic peasants. Since it was a time of famine because of the rising taxes imposed by the Clan, the people cling to their only means of hope – their religion – which the Matsukura Clan attempted to seize by force. For the Shimabara citizens, their rebellion was a testament to their ardent faith, and they did not fear death for it served a greater good – which was ultimately seeing the world reborn.
Referred as someone who is similar to the “Mandate of Heaven,” his followers celebrated his victory despite himself feeling that it was something they did not deserve. He fell from grace when the Edo Shogunate ordered Elder Matsudaira Nobutsuna to storm Shirou’s group who made Hara Castle their bastion. The Supreme Commander starved the latter and they eventually were sentenced to decapitation and a number of grotesque punishments. When Shirou’s time finally came, he accepted his responsibility for the death of his comrades and himself. However, there was one thing that he can never accept, which was the fact that he was not able to see the utopian world coming to fruition after risking so many lives. This was mentioned during his last breath as he confessed to God in solemn prayer.
During his childhood, people recognize him as nearly a Saint due to the miracles he performed. Shrouded in mystery, some accounts claim that he might be the son of God because of the miracles such as curing people’s injuries, and treading on water. As a result, his fanatics worship him in the prohibited religion.
