Origins
There are several stories that traced the roots of Shuten Douji. One recalls that through Yamata-no-Orochi and an unidentified human woman, she came about on the Ibuki Mountain. The other tale mentinoed that she was sent by Dragon King Kuzuryuu. Regardless of interpretation, it is evident that Shuten Douji is born from the dragon god.
An account claims that she was responsible for the abduction of several girls in Kyoto. This prompted the Emperor to send Raikou and the Four Heavenly Kings to infiltrate the lair inhabited by Shuten Douji. When Shuten Douji was decapitated, her head sprang and attempted to retaliate against Minamoto no Raikou.
Owing to her roots, she may also be referred to as Ibuki Douji, however this should not be interchanged with the other demon, Ibaraki Douji who was conceived on the same Mountain.
Shuten Douji cherished a banquet with Sakata Kintoki. Although the host could regard it as simply gorging herself with the delicious food and wine, the guest perceived such event as putting his life at risk if he had been gullible.
