Strategy

Be Patient

Black Diablos is extremely aggressive and attacks far more relentlessly than most monsters in the game. Unlike regular Diablos, many of Black Diablos’ charge attacks home in on targets and can stun you in just one hit. A single mistake can set you up for a quick death.

Be very patient when fighting Black Diablos. Familiarizing yourself with the recovery time of its moves will help you know when to strike and pull back. When Black Diablos is enraged, focus on dodging until it calms down. There are very few opportunities to safely attack it when it is angered.

Stun Resistance

Stun resistance is very helpful when fighting Black Diablos to prevent you from being immobilized after getting knocked down. You can also use the vitality mantle to avoid damage and the stun effect, though only for one hit.

Use Flashpods

You can interrupt Black Diablos’ moves using flashpods. It will stop attacking for a while, giving you time to get in a few hits before it retaliates. Be sure to use flashpods sparingly as Black Diablos will develop resistance to them with constant use.

Get its Horns Stuck in Large Rocks

Lure Black Diablos to a large stone wall to get its horns stuck. You will have a brief period to attack it as it struggles to free itself.

Deploy Shock Traps

Stopping Black Diablos in its tracks lets you unload on it with attacks for a period of time. It will eventually become immune to shock traps the more you use them.

Homing Horn Charge

Black Diablos’ will burrow into the ground to perform a homing horn charge when it surfaces. The attack also has a very long range, making it difficult to avoid. When Black Diablos goes underground, sprint away from it while strafing to the side. Creating a good amount of space away from where it travels reduces the chances of getting hit when it emerges.

You can also use screamer pods to force Black Diablo to surface. It will be immobilized temporarily when it comes out. Pepper it with attacks, then pull back when it comes to.

Walking Horn Rush

Black Diablos’ horn rush move starts up extremely fast. It will walk two steps and immediately thrust its horn in your direction, even if you are directly behind it. The tell is barely noticeable, making it one of Black Diablos’ most dangerous attacks.

Always be on the move when fighting Black Diablos up close. Constantly strafing between attacks lets you avoid the horn rush most of the time. Using a lance, greatsword, or another weapon that can guard also lets you avoid taking damage from it.

Capture It

Black Diablos will retreat to area 14 of the Wildspire Waste when low on health. Try to capture it as soon as possible to avoid a longer battle with the constant risk of getting hit, especially in a very small area. Black Diablos will also be able to use the sand-covered openings there to perform its homing charge attack. Stock-up on shock traps when hunting it. You can bring flash bugs and trap tools to make more if you need to.
