Strategy

Focus on Dodging

Diablos is an extremely aggressive monster with powerful attacks to boot. Attacking it after it misses you is the key to defeating it. Evade its moves by strafing to the side, then get in a few hits before pulling back. Recklessly charging in almost always results in death, as its attacks can easily stun you.

When enraged, Diablos is very dangerous. It will be faster and gives you very few openings for a counterattack. Wait until it enraged state wears off by dodging it the whole time.

Get its Horns Stuck in Large Rocks

You can lure Diablos into a large rock wall as it winds up its charging attack. Its horns will get stuck after crashing into the wall, making it vulnerable for a few seconds.

Use Flashpods

Using Flashpods interrupts Diablos’ charging attack and double horn thrust. It will also temporarily stop attacking to let you whittle down its health before it moves again.

Double Tail Swing Trap

Chasing after Diablos after it misses with its charging attack is very risky. This is because it tends to immediately follow-up with a double tail swing as you approach it from behind. As you catch up to Diablos, wait for it to throw out the move before attacking, preferably near its legs. This is to allow you a quick escape from underneath if it decides to do another double tail swing.

Dealing with Diablos’ Emerging Horn Attack

Diablos will often burrow underground to hit you with its horns as it surfaces. You can tell when it is approaching by the pattern of dust spouting from the ground. Simply sprint away to avoid getting hit. The move is likely to stun you if you do not get away in time.

Alternatively, you can force Diablos to surface by using screamer pods. It will emerge from the ground in pain, giving you time to unleash attacks without risk of a counterattack.

Capture It

When near death, Diablos will rest in area 14 of the Wildspire Waste. It is highly recommended to capture it at this point. This is because area 14 is very small, making it very hard to evade Diablos’ attacks. It also gains a new attack that uses the area’s terrain. Diablos will burrow into the ground and randomly emerge from any of the sand-covered openings on the walls. Be sure to bring shock traps and tranq bombs to capture it.
