Monster Hunter: World Iceborne - Hunter Rank Guide

What is Hunter Rank?

Hunter Rank (HR) is a numerical value that indicates your progress as a hunter in completing quests. Your HR will increase as you clear quests during the main story and continues after you have beaten the game. You can check you HR in the options menu by selecting “Status”.

Raising your HR unlocks many useful features, including tempered monster investigations for farming powerful skill decorations. Quests to obtain other useful equipment can be accessed as well by reaching higher HR.

HR Progression

HR HR Limit Release Quest HR Limit after Release
15 ★9 The Land of Convergence 29
29 ★9 Beyond the Blasting Scales 49
49 ★9 Thunderous Rumble in the Highlands 999

Your HR will progress up to 15 as you clear the main story. Clearing the final main story quest, “★9 The Land of Convergence,” raises the HR limit to 29. From here, you must raise your HR to 29 by doing and redoing quests and investigations.

Upon reaching HR 29, the quest ★9 Beyond the Blasting Scales will be available. Clearing it raises the HR limit further to 49. After reaching the limit again, the final HR limit release quest ★9 Thunderous Rumble in the Highlands will be available.

Recommended Quests to Raise HR

★9 Snow and Cherry Blossoms

This quest nets you 2,400 HR points per run, which is about twice that of hunting tempered elder dragons. The downside is that it will only available on special dates as an event quest.

★9 A Nose for an Eye

This is another quest that gives you 2,400 HR per run.

Tempered Monster Investigations

Tempered monster investigations are significantly more challenging than normal quests and are unlocked upon reaching HR 13. Monsters encountered in these investigations have more health and do even more damage. HR can be raised efficiently by running tempered monster investigations multiple times. Note that the higher the threat level of the investigation, the more HR points you will gain.

★9 Light Upon the River’s Gloom (Random)

After clearing the final story mission ★9 The Land of Convergence, the optional quest ★9 The Land of Convergence will start to appear randomly. Clearing the quest grants you 1,000 HR points and is a good way for increasing your HR. Bear in mind that the quest will disappear in a period of two quests so run them whenever they are available.

Tempered Elder Dragon Investigations

You will unlock threat level 3 tempered investigations upon reaching HR 50. These are among the most challenging non-event quests in the game and pit you against powerful versions of the elder dragons. Clearing these investigations gives you around 900 to 1,200 HR points. They may also reward you with gleaming streamstones, which are required in augmenting equipment to their full potential.
