Monster Hunter: World Iceborne - Investigations

What are Investigations?

Investigations are optional quests that are appear after slaying or capturing monsters, or after breaking certain parts. You can also get them by collecting monster samples and tracks.

Why Do Them?

While all quests reward materials and items after completion, investigations grant reward boxes as bonuses. These contain random loot, including rare monster materials that are hard to obtain.

Reward boxes can be bronze, silver, or gold. The higher the reward box level, the better the chance of obtaining rare materials from them. Investigations grant two to five reward boxes.

Investigations have varying time and faint limits. For the time limit, these can be 15, 30, or 50 minutes. You can be allowed to faint between one to five times. Those with stricter conditions are usually the most rewarding.

Investigations can be replayed a finite number of times. Note that your game data is automatically saved after you confirm your departure.

Tempered Monster Investigations

Upon unlocking tempered monster investigations, rewards boxes will yield feystones and streamstones instead of monster materials. Decorations can be obtained by appraising feystones and augment materials for equipment can be obtained with streamstones.

You will be able to unlock threat level 1 investigations as you go through the main story. For threat level 2 and 3 investigations, you will need to reach a hunter rank of 30 and 50 to access them.

How to “Farm” Investigations

You can “farm” investigations by following a monster without being seen. It will leave tracks that randomly grant investigations. Wear the ghillie mantle to avoid being detected.

For tempered monster investigations, you will need to stalk tempered monsters. Go on high-rank expeditions and look for tempered monster samples and tracks. These will be indicated by blue scoutflies leading you to their location.

After obtaining a 50-minute investigation, follow the monster around and collect its tracks until you get as many as you want.

A good way to get threat level 2 investigations is to follow tempered Diablos in Wildspire Waste. It is always found walking around in area 13. Collect its tracks as it roams about and stay behind it at all times.

To get tempered elder dragon investigations, go to Elder’s Recess and collect the tempered Nergigante samples in area 14. Teostra fur can be found on the path between area 11 to 12.

Other Important Points

The target monster of each investigation is random, regardless of the monster samples and tracks you obtain. You will not necessarily get a tempered Rathalos investigation by collecting tempered Rathalos tracks.

The threat level, however, is consistent with the samples and tracks you obtain. This means that you will not get a tempered elder dragon investigation by collecting tempered Barroth samples and vice versa.
