Strategy

Stay Mobile

Kulu-Ya-Ku is an extremely agile foe that moves around a lot in battle. You will need to match its mobility to land attacks on it. When enraged, it will become faster and more dangerous.

Use Wide-swinging Melee Weapons

Melee weapons like the long sword, switch axe, and great sword are good for clipping the erratic Kulu-Ya-Ku. Be ready to do a bit more running when using the sword and shield or dual blades.

Mount It

Mounting allows you to reliably damage Kulu-Ya-Ku while on its back. This saves you the trouble of having to constantly chase it to whittle down its health.

Watch Out when it has a Rock

Kulu-Ya-Ku’s most notable action is diggin up a rock to use in battle. It will frequently use the rock to hit enemies and to protect itself from attacks. Be very careful when Kulu-Ya-Ku is armed, as it will do tremendous amounts of damage with the rock.

One of its most powerful moves with a rock is a leaping slam. Kulu-Ya-Ku will do this after you get up from being knocked down. Taking two hits in a row will stun you, likely making a third attack fatal. Kulu-Ya-Ku winds up the move by stepping back and briefly pumping its legs. Avoid getting up immediately when you see this to avoid further damage.

Kulu-Ya-Ku will also use its rock as a shield. It will stand upright while holding the rock up, causing your weapon to bounce off if you attack it head-on. Strike it from its side to prevent this from happening. You can also force the rock to break by constantly hacking at it. It will eventually shatter.
