Preparation

Equip armor pieces with high ice resistance. Pieces of the Legiana+ armor set are good options. You can also slot ice resistance jewels into equipment to bolster elemental defense. Using the iceproof mantle reduces even more ice damage from Velkhana’s attacks.

Bring as many healing items and nullberries as you can. Stock up on honey, herbs, mega nutrients, and mandragora to replenish your supply. Using the vitality or temporal mantles also increase your survivability. Have your palico use vigorwasp revival to gain a second wind if you faint during the fight.

Velkhana will have access to many area-of-effect attacks during the final encounter. Skills like marathon runner and constitution will help you stay mobile longer. Using dash juice also has similar effects.

Before heading out, eat a veggie platter to further increase ice resistance.

Velkhana

Many of the strategies used to take on Velkhana in previous quests should still be employed. Do not stay in front of it for too long to avoid its straight ice beams and charging attacks. Flanking the monster and attacking from its side is still quite safe. Watch out for its tail stabs when it spins around to wind up the attack. It can also throw out the move after it raises its tail into the air.

Velkhana Monster Guide

There will be very few opportunities to safely land a hit on Velkhana while it is enraged. Your movement will also be restricted by the mounds of ice that Velkhana creates when it uses its frost breath attack. The glowing marks on the ground indicate where the mounds of ice will appear, so always pay attention to your surroundings. Do not hesitate to pull back and lead the monster to an area with more space for you to move around.

Stay on the move at all times. Velkhana can summon crystals of ice that rain down on the battlefield. Runaway while keeping watch of any crystals that materialize above. These can be also avoided by staying near Velkhana’s wings. The crystals will shatter when they fall on the monster’s back.

Expect a long and drawn out battle against the frost elder dragon of Hoarfrost Reach. With enough patience, you will eventually take down the region’s most challenging foe.
