Strategy

Aim for its head, legs, and tail.

You will deal significant damage to Rathian by attacking its head. You can get in a few good hits with a fast melee weapon like the Dual Blades or Sword and Shield after it misses with its frontal charge, fireball (and triple fireball), and bite attacks. You may, however, need to settle with sheathed attacks using heavier weapons like the hammer or Great Sword before repositioning yourself as Rathian recovers.

Attacking Rathian’s legs is also a good strategy as doing enough damage will cause Rathian to fall down. It will struggle to get up for a brief period, allowing you to unload on it to stack even more damage.

Rathian’s tail, meanwhile, is a relatively safe part to attack. Its length makes it somewhat easy to hit near the tip with wide-swinging melee weapons.

Avoid Rathian’s Somersault

Move away from Rathian when you see it slowly step back. This is the tell for its somersault attack that deals massive damage, inflicts poison, and will knock you down if it connects. Rathian will then become airborne after the move.

Be careful of approaching Rathian while it is airborne as it can perform another somersault. It will usually do the move in the air after flying sideways near your position.

Bring antidotes.

Bring a stock of antidotes to heal yourself of poison if Rathian does manage to hit you with its somersault attack. Having a good supply of potions is also recommended.

Multiple Charge Attacks

When Rathian is enraged, it will perform a series of charge attacks where it will dash forward in a straight line and immediately turn around to do another one. It is recommended to pull back and run sideways until Rathian ends the sequence with a charging bite before engaging it again.

Triple Fireballs

Rathian can throw out three fireballs in a row which shoot out forward, diagonally to the right, and diagonally to the left. Note that staying relatively close to Rathian instead of at a considerable distance gives you time to run to its side, making the monster miss all three shots. You can also use the opportunity to attack Rathian’s head as the move has a bit of windup and recovery before the monster can move again.
