Azzen’ka Item Builds
Core Items
These items are necessary in order to play Azzen’ka optimally. Only diverge from a core item if you are a very experienced player or you have a very good reason for doing so.
Orb of the Magi | Orb of the Magi provides excellent amounts of ability power and HP. It also offers cooldown reduction and sustains him during the laning phase with its restorative passive. A cautious Azzen’ka can use it to stay out in the lane nearly indefinitely without worrying about mana or health. |
Frosty’s Revenge | Frosty’s Revenge gives Azzen’Ka’s abilities an additional slow effect. This makes it much easier to land his spells and affect enemies with Sand Trap. This can be especially deadly during team fights, as Azzen’ka will have a much higher ability to disable the enemy team. |
Hecate’s Diadem | Hecate’s Diadem is necessary on practically every damage centric mage due to the extreme amounts of ability power. It will do more to buff up ability strength than nearly any other item Azzen’ka could buy due to how it amplifies the amount of ability power that every other item Azzen’ka builds. |
Optional Items
Offensive Item Choices
Boomstick | Boomstick is an offensive magic item that can heavily increase a hero’s harassing potential. Holding this item grants abilities an AoE explosion. This is an especially effective on Azzen’ka’s Dust Devil. |
Rhea’s Blessing | Rhea’s Blessing is a more defensive magic item. It provides, cooldown reduction, and, most important, a shield whenever the wielder’s health falls below 40%. Rhea’s Blessing also grants magic life steal, which heals the user whenever they damage enemies with abilities. |
Holy of Holies | Holy of Holies is another excellent item for mages. It possesses the highest flat ability power for a single item in the game, as well as a large HP boost. Given its cost, it is best to get this item last. |
Staff of Nuul |
If opponents are stacking up magic defense, Staff of Nuul will keep mages in the fight. The heavy magic penetration it offers will ensure that spells remain effective throughout the match. The additional ability power and cooldown speed it offers are great boosts to casters as well. |
Tome of the Reaper | Tome of the Reaper is a good counter to enemies who have high HP regeneration or powerful heals. The AoE nature of Azzen’ka’s abilities makes him great at spreading the debuff around to as many enemies as possible. |
Boots Upgrade
Enchanted Kicks | As far as boots upgrades are concerned, Enchanted Kicks are generally the best choice for offensive mages. This item gives him some early ability power and magic pierce, which allows him to hit harder . |
Flashy Boots |
If you want your abilities available more regularly, you can opt to run with Flashy Boots. The cooldown speed it provides will help Azzen’ka apply stacks of Sand Trap quickly and consistently. |
Active Items
Azzen’Ka thrives in team fights against enemies who are clumped together. Getting Arctic Orb may help him last longer in team fights, giving him more options on whether to fight back or retreat safely. |
Sample Item Builds
This build focuses on building Azzen’ka up into a heavy damage dealer. His long range harass will allow the sandman to tear away large parts of the enemy’s health with each successful hit. While squishy, the mage won’t be completely defenseless either. Orb of the Magi, Holy of Holies, and Frosty’s Revenge all provide him with some defensive stats to keep him from being immediately slain. He will still have to keep his distance from enemies to stay alive long, however, since the defensive stats are not enough to stave off most attackers for too long.
A bit of an experimental build, this gives Azzen’ka a different approach to fights while also compensating for his main weakness: mobility. Both Zweihander and Frosty’s Revenge give him a nice bit of additional movement speed, bringing his speed up near 600 when paired with shoes. Azzen’ka will be less of a pure caster here, though, and will have to rely a bit on his normal attacks. His cooldowns are low enough-especially with the 30% cooldown reduction this build sports, that he will be able to cast abilities fairly regularly and thereby frequently benefit from Apocalypse’s on-hit bonus. This will pair with Zweihander to offer what is effectively a 4th damaging spell after an ability cast. Zweihander will also work along with his already impressive clear speed to allow him to rip through minion waves as he pushes or moves between lanes to gank.

I call this the Plague Spreader, I use this as a no escape if the enemies line up got Gaia’s standard, regen and all life steals. Orb of Magi, Enchanted Boots, Tome of Reaper, Frosty Revenge, Staff of Nuul then Hectate Diadem. Good for heroes like Taara, Arum, KG, Lubu and others.
Ok here I go, this is the build I typically use
Orb of the magi, a vital item for many mages
Sonic boots, for those pesky mm or assassins
Frosty’s revenge, slows hp and ap
Aegis, cd reduction, hp, mana, armor, and an attk sp reduce for mm or ass.
hecate diadem, for more damage
holy of holies, for a powerful ap and hp boost
For context I am an Azzen’ka main
