Max Item Builds

Item Builds List

Core Items

These items are necessary in order to play Max optimally. Only diverge from a core item if you are a very experienced player or have a very good reason for doing so.

Arena of Valor Mantle of Ra
Mantle of Ra
This has all of the stats Max loves along with a passive that compliments his Static Shock. As a bruiser, Max needs to build up both offensive and defensive stats. In addition, the item’s burning aura pairs well with the periodic damage caused by Static Shock. The continual ticking away of health will soften up even the heartiest of enemies.
Arena of Valor Medallion of Troy
Medallion of Troy
Medallion of Troy provides a number of predominantly defensive benefits to its holder. Holding the highest magic defense in a single location, the item can provide great coverage if an enemy mage is getting out of hand. The cooldown reduction it additionally offers is a good way to keep Max casting his abilities during team fights.

Optional Items

Arena of Valor Frost Cape
Frost Cape
Max wants to stick to an opponent after getting close. Frost Cape allows him to do just this by slowing his target each time he follows up an ability with a normal attack. His low-cooldown Bionic Blender pairs with this item especially well, plus both casts of Smooth Moves can proc Frost Power.
Arena of Valor Spear of Longinus
Spear of Longinus
This item may very well be broken on Max. Not the broken to mean that it’s unreasonably good, but the kind where the mechanics aren’t working properly. Casting Max’s ultimate afflicts every enemy on the field with three stacks of the spear’s debuff. Beyond this very strong quirk, the spear is still a very powerful pick for Max. His tendency to quickly spam out a string of abilities is great for taking away enemy armor, and each tick of Static Shock adding a stack of the debuff as well. As such, Max will be able to strip down the maximum amount of armor from his target incredibly quickly.
Arena of Valor The Aegis
The Aegis
The stats offered by The Aegis make it beastly in Max’s hands: armor, mana, and a hefty amount of cooldown reduction. The passive will weaken any ranged attackers who try to attack from afar and leave them easier to either escape from or catch up to.
Arena of Valor Shield of the Lost
Shield of the Lost
While not offering the same utility as The Aegis, Shield of the Lost can still be a good pick for the Wunderkind. It offers very large amounts of health and armor and the slowing aura it provides pairs well with Max’s up-in-yo-face playstyle.
Arena of Valor Mail of Pain
Mail of Pain
Another item suited for punishing physical attackers. Mail of Pain offers a decent amount of armor and health along with a passive that damages any who physically attack its wearer. This is an excellent item for bruisers like Max, offering both defensive stats and an offensive effect to satisfy their needs of both.
Arena of Valor Fenrir's Tooth
Fenrir’s Tooth
The passive from Fenrir’s Tooth combines nicely with Static Shock, boosting the ticking true damage by 30%. Further, the burst that Bionic Blender and Liftoff offer – particularly when scaled up with the added AD from Fenrir’s Tooth – make it very easy to knock heroes down to under 50% health to make use of Fenrir’s Tooth passive.

Sample Item Builds

This item set builds upon Max’s strengths as a bruiser. He wants a blend of durability and damage to be able to both survive dives into enemy territory and punish enemies after he gets there. Mantle of Ra is a great fusion item with an aura that goes well with Max’s passive. We pick The Aegis over Shield of the Lost (whose aura we tested to be just melee range) in order to deal with ranged attackers who are able to stay out of Max’s influence. The 20% cooldown reduction it offers is an amazing bonus as well. Frost Cape gives a small bonus to damage despite its defensive stats, making it great for bruisers. It will additionally help Max stick to his target if Smooth Moves isn’t enough. Fenrir’s Tooth is purely offensive, but is one of the best offensive choices for Max. The raw attack damage it offers will go a long way in strengthening his abilities. In addition, the burst that his ultimate provides will make it easy to get enemies under half health and thereby affected by the item’s passive.

Here we build Max as more of a pure tank. His initiating potential is strong enough to contribute to the team without him needing to deal much damage to enemies. Mantle of Ra remains, despite its offensive focus, as a little attack damage and the burn effect are still great for the Wunderkind. Items like Mail of Pain and Hyoga’s Edge considerably beef up Max’s defense, adding a bit of offensive utility as well through their passives. Players running this build should focus more on suppressing enemies with Smooth Moves and softening them with Static Shock instead of trying to burst them down.

Defensive items are for those too cowardly to rely on their strength. Here we show off Max’s damage, changing his robotic fists into deadly canons and his rocket sled into an ICBM. Rush squishy targets with Liftoff, liquefying them and them using Bionic Blender to mix them up into a sucker smoothie. If somehow this wasn’t enough to finish them off, your electrifying presence will tear the opponent down with huge blasts of true damage.

  2. Darkbreaker had a pretty awesome Max AD build. Mantle of Ra, Sonic Boots (or Gilded Greaves), Rankbreaker, Medallion of Troy, Fenrir’s Tooth, and Blade of Eternity. Additional AD helps due to Max’s skills now scaling on additional AD, Blade of Eternity helps increase damage on all of his auras (Mantle of Ra, Static Shock).
