Arena of Valor Raz Hero Guide

Core Items

These items are necessary in order to play Raz optimally. Only diverge from a core item if you are a very experienced player or you have a very good reason for doing so

Arena of Valor Boomstick
Boomstick is an essential item for Raz, granting each of his abilities an additional explosion effect. The increase in damage this offers is great and will go far in maximizing Raz’s potential.
Arena of Valor Hecate's Diadem
Hecate’s Diadem
While not offering any utility or defense, Hecate’s Diadem has a greater ability power potential than any other single item. Not only does it boast a huge base ability power bonus, it increases the amount that the wielder gains from other sources as well.

Optional Items

Offensive Item Choices

Arena of Valor Rhea's Blessing
Rhea’s Blessing
As a melee mage, Raz needs a bit of survivability to make it through fights. Rhea’s Blessing helps in this regard both with magic life steal and a shield. The magic life steal will help Raz out between fights, giving him a way to refresh his health. The shield it offers is a great help in closer fights, helping the boxer squeak out a victory when his health is low.
Arena of Valor Holy of Holies
Holy of Holies
Holy of Holies offers a fantastic amount of ability power along with a nice boost to the wielder’s HP. While it doesn’t offer any special effect to the user, the stat value that Holy of Holies offers is too good to ignore.
Arena of Valor Orb of the Magi
Orb of the Magi
Orb of the Magi provides a number of beneficial stats along with a very useful restoration of health each time the wearer levels up. While not always essential to Raz, especially since he does not benefit from the mana boost the item provides, it can still be a very useful tool for him when laning and roaming around the map.
Arena of Valor Apocalypse
As someone who enjoys bringing his fist into enemy faces, Raz can get a lot of mileage out of Apocalypse. This works both with attacks empowered or unempowered by his passive.

Defensive Items Choices

Arena of Valor Medallion of Troy
Medallion of Troy
When facing mages who have started to snowball, Medallion of Troy can keep you in the game. It offers a tremendous amount of protection from magic both in the form of magic defense and a magic blocking shield provided every few seconds. It additionally offers some health and cooldown reduction to avoid being too much of a situational item.
Arena of Valor Berith's Agony
Berith’s Agony
Berith’s Agony grants both ability power and armor to the user along with cooldown speed. This is a good way to fend off enemy physical attackers without too much of a sacrifice to damage. The health-percentage damage bonus is a nice plus to give Raz’s fireballs a bit more bite.
Arena of Valor Ancestral Glory
Ancestral Glory
You can take Ancestral Glory if regularly burst down or focused in fights. The revival it offers its wielder is a great way to keep a fight going and punish the enemy for jumping on you.

Boots Upgrade

Arena of Valor Enchanted Kicks
Enchanted Kicks
Enchanted Kicks provide magic pierce and therefore are a great choice when trying to maximize his damage potential.
Arena of Valor Gilded Greaves
Gilded Greaves
Gilded Greaves are a good defensive option, shortening the amount of time he spends affected by crowd control. As someone who wants to be regularly moving, Raz is not particularly fond of anything that slows him down.

Sample Item Builds

This build has Raz going (nearly) all in on offense. Every item provides to his offense in some way, Boomstick, Hecate’s Diadem, and Holy of Holies doing the most through large amounts of ability power. He will have a bit of defensive beef to him, though, Frosty’s Revenge providing some magic defense and Rhea’s Blessing offering a shield should his health fall too far.

This build gives Raz a lot more defense, helping him stay up and going in rough fights. Orb of the Magi starts Raz off with lots of health along with a regenerative effect to keep him up longer. His defenses are further bolstered by Rhea’s Blessing and Berith’s Agony, allowing him to take some punishment as he runs into enemy range. His damage will still hit rather high levels despite this, Boomstick and Hecate’s Diadem still included to provide their large ability power offerings.

While attacking jungle monsters can be a bit awkward, Raz is more than capable of acting as the team’s jungler. We take Loki’s Curse, Apocalypse, and Boomstick to stack their effects together for explosive face punches. Follow abilities up with normal attacks to really amp up your damaging potential. We build up Raz’s ability power further with Hecate’s Diadem and its amazing passive, finishing with Rhea’s Blessing for a bit of added sustain and a shield for when things get rough.

  1. The build that’s been working for me has been: Phoenix Tear, Gilded Greaves, Boomstick, Hecates’, Berith’s, and Soaring Aura. Phoenix Tear can be sold for whatever item you need in the end game. I usually buy Apocalypse for damage or Blade of Infinity if I keep getting targeted.
After Getting Phoenix Tear, get greaves for rotation speed and keep ganking lanes for farm.
I choose not to get Staff of Null since his fireball lowers enemy defense and he has very up-close abilities that pair well with the health and passive of soaring aura.

  2. This is my ultimate raz build

    Boomstick – enchanted kicks – hecate’s diadem – apocalypse – nuul/arctic – holy of holies

In late games, I can solo kill most warriors with apocalypse. With the help of his passive, his third attack can reach up to 2,5k. Making him a massive threat not just to carries, but also tankier heroes.

When facing raz, some tanks might get 2 magic def items which can lead to their own and their teammates’ demise. Why?

Raz’s skill 2 (max lv) reduces enemies’ magic armor by 300 + 75 from boots + arcana + nuul which means whatever you do, his attacks are basically near pure damage and you just lost 2 item slots for phys armor.

IMO It’s actually better to ditch the magic armor altogether (if no other mages are present) and lock on him first during wars. That can work only if your team is well coordinated

In late games, I’d usually sell the boots for def boots or another magic item (when trying to end the game).

    • Would soaring aura be a viable substitute to nuul if your team is composed of more magic users like arum / marja / roxie who are all becoming more and more popular (at least in the MSP server… lol) ?

      • It depends on how both the opponents and your are building. In this case either Marja or Arum would be better suited for the item, but Raz can certainly benefit. If no one on your team is building it, and the opponent isn’t stacking magic defense, go for it. If they are stacking, maybe swap out a different item to stick in Soaring Aura.

        • I like how devastating Snekgawon’s build is, and even more so on the thought process why building this is viable in a teamplay perspective. But I’m also exploring what gear/s in this build is/are “substitutable” based on your and the opponent’s team and at the same time still somehow maintain the level of effectiveness of this build. Thanks for your input Green. Will certainly keep that in mind.

          • I should mention that there are heroes that can hard counter my build ie. Elsu and Aleister which means I have to be less agressive (or not if my obs is really good at keeping me safe). I might substitute apocalypse for rhea and use gilded greaves. Ambushing from the bushes would be a good idea to counter his counters (lol). But generally, if both sides are equally skilled, I would just play it safe

  3. Raz-> Crit build: Item 1= Claves Saneti, Item 2= Boots of speed, Item 3= The beast, Item 4= Omni Arms, Item 5= Fenrir’s Tooth, Item 6= Slikk’s Sting.
    How does it work?
well The Claves of Saneti increases the movement speed of Raz while he tries to chase an enemy or while trying to get in a fight in the top line or in what ever line it has to go on, and the boots of speed help’s Raz increase he’s movement speed while trying to catch on on a enemy Omni Arms is good on while casting the fire ball the Omni arms will increase his next normal auto attack with more physical damage because the normal true damage on Raz is something that it really helps him because however his ap dmg the true damage of raz with his upper cut and auto’s deal enough dmg even tho you better use more crit items so he gains the true dmg the Fenrir’s Tooth increases all the true damage of raz when the target is below of his 30% so you can make sure that you clear the enemy out and finally but not last the Slikk’s Sting helps on his resistance against damage heroes/assasins and the one that i didn’t spell was the “The Beast” but it doesn’t have any additional effects but this item helps alot while you try to knock down a tank with the lifesteal and when you are in a team fight or start a team fight it’s good with the true mobility of Raz to lifesteal even just with the fireballs or while you catch few enemy’s with the upper cut.

The whole idea is: Crit it helps release the true damage of Raz and the mobility while in combat or even trying to chase with it andd the lifesteal while fighting against an enemy tank or assasin and he gain’s alot of attack speed and true damage while you go against an enemy on a line that is 1 on 1.

Note: everything was tested by me and you can test that your own too.
Everything is calculated with each and every situation you have to deal with.

    • We’re sorry, but this build is just not something that we consider viable for serious play – perhaps as a joke build in casual. When switching damage types, it is always from physical to magical in order to catch the opposing team off guard. Players already build plenty of armor so going out of your way to get physical damage makes little sense. In addition, none of Raz’s abilities scale with attack damage, so going out of your way to increase the damage on his attacks just makes his abilities worthless. Finally, since Raz is a melee character, Claves Sancti does not increase his movement speed.

  4. Can you guys please update this Raz builds? Because some mage items, like Hecate’s Diadem are nerfed and it is a core item for Raz, so maybe there is a new build for him. Thanks!

    • Currently going through builds again to get them more up to date, but it can be a lengthy process. At the moment my attention is split more between AWC and hero releases, but I am slowly making my way through the builds to get them updated.
