The Difference Between AoV and LoL
Arena of Valor (AoV) and League of Legends (LoL) might seem like the same game to people new to either. In reality, the games have several differences that set them apart from one another.
Is it a Rip Off?
People who have played League of Legends might mistake Arena of valor as a rip off, but it isn’t. League of Legends is developed by Riot Games, and Arena of Valor is developed by Tencent. Tencent is the parent company of Riot Games, and their relationship is much closer than that of an associated company.
Arena of Valor is not just a mobile version of League of Legends, but a completely new game with mechanics and systems suited to its platform. The more one played both games, the more that the differences between them become apparent.
Platform
League of Legends can only be played on PC, while Arena of Valor can only be played on mobile devices (iOS and Android) and Nintendo Switch at present.
As it is more common for someone to own a smartphone than a PC capable of playing League of Legends, Arena of Valor has the potential of being available to many more people than LoL is at the moment.
Playability
Both League of Legends and Arena of Valor are MOBAs (Multiplayer Online Battle Arena), a genre in which players split up into two teams and try to destroy the enemy’s base. While the main objective is the same in both, many of the details surrounding play are quite different.
Characters
At time of writing, League of Legends has 139 characters while Arena of Valor has between 42 to 59 characters, depending on the region. Even though League of Legends has more characters to play with, Arena of Valor has some collaboration characters such as Batman and Superman from DC Comics.
Strength of Minions
A minion is an NPC unit that advances along the lanes and attacks any enemy unit or structure it comes across. Minions in Arena of Valor are stronger than those in LoL, though travel in smaller groups.
Match Length
A match in League of Legends takes about 30 minutes to an hour, while matches in Arena of Valor can last from about five minutes to around twenty. In addition, League of Legends usually takes a few minutes to find a match while Arena of Valor finds matches within a few seconds.
Ranked Match
League of Legends ranked matches use a draft system, either side able to ban heroes and choose them in a preset order. Arena of Valor’s ranked matches follow the same blind pick mode used in casual matches. Bans only occur in Diamond matches or above (though there are rumors that more players will be able to ban soon).
