Arena of Valor (AoV) - Big Changes Coming to Arena of Valor (New Support Items, Quality of Life Improvements)

In their recent previews of an upcoming patch, Garena has revealed a number of changes, including new support items, quality of life improvements, bounty alterations, and hero tweaks, that are coming soon to Arena of Valor.

Overview

In a recent set of posts to their homepage, Garena Taiwan has revealed that a number of changes are being made to Arena of Valor in an upcoming patch. First to come were quality-of-life improvements, among them role selection, targeting, and visual improvements. Then, additional information on the new map released. Finally, and most importantly (tank/support mains rejoice!), we got our first look at the long-awaited new support items (and, yeah ok, there were some slight hero changes too).

Once again, credit goes to Reddit user Sylpheez for making much of the information publicly available in English.

General Changes

Role Selection

While currently players only have pings of “I’ll scout the Dark Slayer!” and “I’ll Jungle!” to communicate their intended role to the team, players will now have the ability to show their intention during character select on a map. While this does not lock others out of bad decisions, it will prevent mistakes that can otherwise arise, such as being mistakenly labeled as a jungler when taking Punish on Xeniel or Taara. This should additionally help newer players learn what is expected when it comes to laning positions, even if the flipping map can still throw them for a loop.

Practice Mode

Poor Thane is finally catching a break. Where previously he was the only defender in practice mode, nakedly defending against god-mode heroes, players can now select the hero they are playing against as well as the arcana and items that they will use. Players will be able to better measure a hero’s power when trying them out as well as see how heroes fair in different situations. If nothing else, it will make my job way easier.

Draft Trading

In draft mode, players will be able to switch their drafting position for more freedom in hero choice. As an example, should the person in position 1 draft Arum for the person in position 4, the two players can then switch places in the draft so that the person who previously picked Arum can choose whichever hero they like. This will help teams out when drafting when players have differing hero pools. The person who wanted Arum in the above example wouldn’t be out of luck should they lack any heroes the first player wished to trade Arum for.

Item Builds

Wanting to queue up items in game that differ from your preset build? Well good news, friend, as you will soon be able to do just that. The shop-page in-game is receiving a build bar where players can edit their preset items on the fly. This is especially useful if one has ever thought “I’ll make X after I finish Y,” and had to keep reminding themselves as to not continue to the next preset item.

Minor Tweaks

Magic Shields
Shields that only block magic damage (e.g. Medallion of Troy) will now be purple. Players will be able to better distinguish a hero’s survivability at a glance rather than having to double check the hero’s items.

Targeting
Players will now be able to cast abilities by dragging the ability icon onto the target’s portrait when the portrait option is enabled. While not allowing for perfect skill shots, it should allow for many abilities to be used more consistently, especially by those who are weaker at skill shots.

Matchmaking
The game will now work harder to match like teams with like teams. 5-man stacks will be paired against duo and solo queue players much less regularly and more frequently with other 5-man stacks. This will, however, cause queue times to rise, though the frustration of a longer wait should be offset by the promise of fairer matches.

Ability Descriptions
Hero ability descriptions will have more detailed ability bonus numbers outside of matches.

Valor Prime
A new paid service granting a pool of monthly heroes and skins has been introduced to Arena of Valor

Group Lobby
Players may return to the main menu after joining a group lobby without being removed from the lobby.

Hero Page
Many of us with stubby fingers (e.g. me) have accidentally bumped the “Hero Details Page” arrow when trying to move or use an ability. The dev team has smiled on us, an option being added that will disable the arrow that opens said page.
