Arena of Valor (AoV) - Major Patch Finally Coming to Tencent Servers (Full Details Listed)

Three weeks after version 16 debuted on the Taiwan server and seven weeks after the July patch, both are coming to Tencent Servers. We detail all the changes to come to western players on the tentative release date of August 30.

Tencent Finally Catches Up

The long-awaited “version 16” update, one that gives Arena of Valor arguably its biggest face lift to date, is finally set to hit Tencent servers – Europe, North America, Latin America, and Asia – on the tentatively scheduled date of August 30. Included in the update is the map makeover to better mimic the King of Glory map, the overhaul of several items as well as the introduction of support items, and some hero balance changes and quality of life improvements. Also included are the changes in a smaller (but still significant) patch that went live on the Taiwan server all the way back in early July.

Due to the multiple patches and multiple blog posts for each patch, the information can be a bit scattered, so we’ve decided to aggregate all of the information about the patch in one place. We’ve provided our commentary on any new information that’s come up since we covered the patch(es) previously.

Map Rehauled

Everything about the map was re-designed, with visual changes being made from the towers and epic monsters down to each individual minion. We covered most of the changes regarding the map, but there were a few nuggets of information still left over. So here are the full practical (non-visual) changes:

Abyssal Dragon

  • First ten minutes: normal Abyssal Dragon.
  • At ten-minute mark, Abyssal Dragon transforms into enraged Abyssal Dragon, which spawns every 5 minutes. Defeating an enraged Abyssal Dragon provides the following benefits:
    • Tank: recover 1% of Max HP every second
    • Warrior: increases attack damage by 50 (+10%)
    • Assassin: increases armor pierce by 100, magic pierce by 75, and movement speed by 20
    • Mage: increases ability power by 75 (+15%)
    • Marksman: increases critical chance by 10% and armor pierce by 15%
    • Support: Unique Passive – nearby heroes recover 100 HP and 50 Mana every 5 seconds
  • Enraged Abyssal Dragon also drops the Abyssal Stone, which can be picked up by any member of either team. The Abyssal Stone makes a hero invincible for 0.5 seconds when taking lethal damage, recovering 1000 (+10% max HP) HP.

Dark Slayer

  • Spawns every 5 minutes, beginning at 8 minutes into a match.
  • The Dark Slayer buff now restores 1% of HP and Mana every second, provides 20% additional movement speed for 9 seconds when leaving the Altar in base, and recovery granted by the Altar goes into effect when remaining in battle for 90 seconds.
  • Defeating the Dark Slayer allows the team who slayed it to summon a drake:
    • The ability to summon the Drake is available for 90 seconds to the player who felled the Dark Slayer.
    • Drake out-ranges towers. Each time the Drake attacks a tower, counter damage is inflicted upon itself. The Drake will fly away once its HP is depleted.
    • After being summoned, the Drake grows continuously for 10 seconds, gaining 7% damage reduction every 2 seconds, up to a maximum of 35%.
    • Drake passive ability: Drake Roar: While the Drake is summoned, all ally minions gain 25% max HP, 10% attack damage, 10% movement speed, and their physical size is increased by 10%

Abyssal Curse

  • Teams that defeat the enraged Abyssal Dragon or Dark Slayer will suffer the Abyssal Curse, significantly lowering their damage against the Dark Slayer and enraged Abyssal Dragon for a long time

Spirit Sentinel

  • The Spirit Sentinel buff now restores 50 HP per second and increases movement speed by 20 for 60 seconds. After exiting combat, movement speed is increased by an additional 40.

Unlisted Super Minion Changes

New Minion

This change was not listed in any patch notes we could find, but an additional minion has been added to Arena of Valor. Looking at the red minions in the above image and starting from the left, the minions are: ranged minion, melee minion, siege minion, super minion, and finally, the new minion. The new minion – we’ve been calling it “super duper minion” – are the three minions that spawn in the mid lane when all nine towers are destroyed. The outer two lanes still spawn “normal” super minions when all nine towers are defeated.

The new super duper minions deal more damage than super minions (roughly 20% more, though we haven’t tested all levels), and have magic defense equal to their armor (whereas normal super minions do not have magic defense).

Hero Changes

The coming hero balance changes and bug fixes are a combination of the patches that hit Taiwan in July and August, with a nerf to Roxie added as well as two changes to Zill not listed in the July patch. The changes to Ignis, Lindis, Marja, Nakroth, Rourke, Tel’Annas, The Joker, Toro, Wonder Woman, and Zill were made in the July patch, while the rest of the changes were made in the August patch. Zuka was altered in both patches. We’ve already provided our thoughts on the changes in the links above, so we’ll only comment on Roxie and Zill here.

Ilumia

Divine Light

  • Magic damage rescaled from 300/360/420/480/540/600 (+0.55 AP) –> 350/410/470/530/590/650 (+0.45 AP)

Banish

  • Slow reduced from 30/34/38/42/48/50% for 1s –> 30% for 1s
  • Increases Ilumia’s movement speed by 30% for 1s if an enemy is hit by the ability

The Flash

  • Base Armor increased from 85 –> 91
  • Base max HP increased from 3292 –> 3370

Mach Punch

  • Fixed a bug where the attack range was longer than the visual effect shown
  • Attack Range (after fix) reduced from 5.5m –> 5m (10%)

Krixi

Mischief

  • Magic damage reduced from 450/550/650/750/850/950 (+0.8 AP) –> 450/530/610/690/770/850 (+0.85AP)

Jinnar

Sutra of Pain

  • Jinnar can now move while casting

Kahlii

Spiritual Blessing

  • Shield points increased from 200 (+30 per level) (+0.4 AP) –> 250 (+50 per level) (+0.3 AP)

Marja

  • Attack speed gain per level increased from 1% –> 2%

Dark Pulse

  • Magic damage rescaled from 350/440/530/620/710/800 (+0.52 AP) –> 400/480/560/640/720/800 (+0.5 AP)

Ghostwalk

  • Magic damage increased from 300/450/600 (+0.45 AP) –> 450/675/900 (+0.65 AP)

Zill

  • Base attack damage increased from 163 –> 173
  • Attack damage gained per level decreased from 13.2 –> 11.2

Dustdevil

  • Duration of target movement speed reduction increased from 0.25s –> 0.5s
  • Additional normal attack damage to monsters increased from 25 –> 40

Wind Shift

  • Immobility caused by Wind Shift is shortened

Tornado

  • Final range decreased from 6m –> 4m (33%)

SG comments: The changes to Wind Shift and Tornado were not listed in the July notes where Zill was buffed on Taiwan. Moving some of the power from his ultimate to his other abilities makes sense to us, especially since the Wind Shift change will make Zill feel like the immobile terror he is meant to be.

Speeding Bullet

  • Fixed a bug where it occasionally caused additional damage
  • Duration of accumulated power from charge up speed rescaled from 10s –> 8/9/10 seconds
  • Hit range during flight decreased from 4m –> 3m (25%)

SG comments: Roxie had a bit too much durability considering the other tools she had in her kit, so this nerf was warranted in our opinion

Max

Liftoff

  • Fixed a bug where the sound effects of Max’s ultimate would not stop after he landed
  • Distance at which Max can strike the enemy when flying is reduced from 4.5m –> 4m (11%)

Wukong

  • Fixed a bug where everyone in a match could hear the sound effects of his normal attacks that are strengthened by his passive when visible

Item Changes

Like with the heroes, some of the items were already changed in July on other servers. Those items were Blitz Blade, Bow of Slaughter, Shuriken, Virtue’s Bracelet and Virtue’s Necklace. Since the change, Blitz Blade has become a staple item for many marksmen on the affected servers, leading in particular to the resurgence of Valhein as a tanky, stun-machine solo-laner.

  • Removes control effects on one nearby ally. Also restores target’s HP by (160 + 30 per level), increases target’s movement speed by 20% for 1s, and grants immunity to movement speed reduction for 2s. 90s cooldown.

Bounties and Other Mechanics

Though we outlined the changes here, we’ll list them again for the sake of completion of this article.

Jungling

  • Changed the gold amount earned from monsters (that increases every 30 seconds) from 2.6% gain throughout the match –> 1% for the first 2 minutes of the match, increasing to 4.5% at 8 minutes
  • After 11 minutes, the gold amount increase caps at 165%
  • Changed the experience amount earned from monsters (that increases every 30 seconds) from 7.7% throughout the match –> 3% for the first two minutes of the match, increasing to 10% at 8 minutes
  • After 11 minutes, the experience amount increase caps at 240%
  • Base gold earned from the Sage and Might Golems decreased from 78 –> 65
  • Base gold for Tree Toad, Luminous Lizard, Wild Monkey, and Rock Crab increased from 50 –> 55

Towers

  • Team experience from destroying a tower decreased from 300 experience per person –> 200 experience per person
  • Sturdy Shield changed from the first tower in the Dark Slayer lane having 50% damage reduction during the first 3 minutes of a match –> the first tower in the Dark Slayer lane having 50% damage reduction for the first three minutes + the second tower in the middle lane has 50% damage reduction for the first 6 minutes

SG comments: In our testing (on the MSP server), we found that the mid first tower and the Abyssal lane first tower received roughly 35% damage reduction, while the Dark Slayer lane first tower received about 40% damage resistance. The second tower in the middle lane properly reduced damage by 50%.

Minion Waves

  • Additional gold from last hit increased from 30% –> 40%
  • Minion HP gain during the match changed from 2.77% (0-10 minutes) 5% (10-20 minutes) and 3% (20-30 minutes) –> 3% (0-10 minutes) 6% (10-20 minutes) and 7.5% (20-25 minutes)
  • Minion HP gain limit increased from 315% –> 400%
  • Minion movement speed gain increased from no gain during a match –> After 10 minutes, minion waves will increase movement speed until it reaches a maximum of 126% base movement speed at 18 minutes (base minion movement speed: 300)

Hero Kills

  • Gold reward for a kill is decreased from 200 gold during the entire match –> 150 Gold for heroes levels 1-3, 200 Gold for heroes levels 4 and above
  • First blood gold reward reduced from 100 gold –> 75 gold
  • Reduced experience reward for killing enemy heroes at levels 1-3

Experience and Gold

  • Changed the comeback mechanic from: All heroes at a lower level than the highest-level hero would receive 50% more experience from kills, assists, minion waves, jungle monsters, and Tower kills) when behind by 2 levels and 100% more experience when behind by 3 levels –> Friendly heroes at a level lower than the average level of all enemy heroes will receive 40% more experience when 1 level behind the enemy average, 80% more when 2 levels behind, and 100% when 3 levels behind
  • Increased passive experience gain from 4 per second (6-10 minutes) 5 per second (10-12 minutes) and 6 per second (after 12 minutes) –> 5 per second (6-10 minutes) 6 per second (10-12 minutes) and 7 per second (after 12 minutes)
  • Increase passive gold gain from 2 gold per second throughout the match –> 2 gold per second (before 6 minutes) and 3 gold per second (after 6 minutes)

Quality of Life Improvements and Other Additions

Battle Mechanics

  • Silence no longer interrupts normal attacks and other non-channeled casting

  • Added a Lane Selection interface to the Hero Selection lobby
  • Added a Ranked Tier Defense mechanism
    • Once a month, all players in Diamond tier and below will have a chance to prevent dropping down a ranked tier.
    • After this one time defense, another loss would result in ranking down one tier as usual
  • Added an AI assistant to the main menu that will provide players with tips, reminders, and other help

Matchmaking

  • Changes were made to our matchmaking algorithm to more fairly and efficiently match players in groups.
  • Players that were part of a queue where someone did not ready up in time will be prioritized when being placed back in the matchmaking queue

Game Polish and Optimizations

  • Windows for using, purchasing, and selling items will now have sliders to adjust the quantity of items
  • After joining a lobby with friends, you can now return to the main menu without being kicked out of the lobby
  • Hero ability descriptions will have more detailed ability bonus numbers
  • New sound effects for monsters, Dark Slayer spawning, Dark Slayer death, when the Drake is summoned, and for spawning at base
