Characters in the Pokemon Direct Trailer
Nintendo’s Pokemon Direct livestream event on June 6 revealed some major and supporting characters that will appear in Pokemon Sword and Shield. The game is scheduled for release on November 15, 2019.
Named Characters
Leon
Known as “the greatest Trainer in all of Galar,” Leon is the undefeated champion of the region. His prowess in Pokemon battles coupled with his shining personality have earned him the admiration of trainers across the land. He is the older brother of Hop, the player’s rival. Leon is also the childhood friend of Professor Magnolia’s granddaughter Sonia.
Leon’s outfit is the standard attire that trainers from the Galar region wear during official Pokemon battles, though his features a red cape to establish his status as the “king” of Pokemon trainers. His hat also has gold markings that visibly appear like a crown.
Leon was frequently seen with a Charizard in the trailer, likely one of the Pokemon he will use when the player battles him in the Pokemon League.
Hop
Hop is the younger brother of Leon and is the player’s rival. He begins his journey on the same day as the player to become a champion Pokemon trainer like his older brother.
Hop wears a blue denim jacket and black pants, dressing more casually than his famous brother.
The trailer showed Hop sending out a Sobble in battle, though it is yet to be confirmed what starter Pokemon he will actually choose at the beginning of his journey.
Professor Magnolia
The Galar region’s leading authority in Pokemon research, Professor Magnolia specializes in the study of the mysterious Dynamax phenomenon. She lives with her granddaughter and lab assistant Sonia, who she sends on special assignments.
Professor Magnolia wears a lab coat over her yellow dress. She walks around with a cane embellished with the likeness of what might be a pre-evolution of Corviknight on the handle.
Sonia
Sonia is Professor Magnolia’s granddaughter and research assistant, traveling across the Galar region on special assignments from the professor. Despite her youth, she has a vast knowledge of Pokemon that she shares with the player. She and the current league Champion Leon have been friends since childhood.
Sonia’s outfit consists of a brown coat and light blue pants. She seems to have a fondness for hearts, as several of them can be seen in her hair, on her shoes, and on her bag.
Milo
Milo is a gym leader who favors grass-type Pokemon. He has a broad physique and a kind heart. Milo believes in enjoying Pokemon battles and is well-liked by other trainers from his gym.
Milo wears the standard attire for official Pokemon battles, though his is dominantly green to imply his specialty in grass Pokemon. He wears a green scarf and a wide agriculturist hat.
Milo was seen using a Dynamaxed Eldegoss against the player in the trailer, which may be his strongest Pokemon.
Enemy Trainers
Several enemy trainers were shown in the trailer, encountered by the player at various locations on their journey.
A male trainer wearing overalls and a cap challenged the player as she walked on the road toward Milo’s gym. The enemy trainer’s design looks similar to a breeder.
A female trainer, presumably a cool trainer, beauty, or school teacher, was seen near a signpost on the road.
A miner was encountered in the mines as the player walked along the railroad path.
A black belt was the last enemy trainer shown and appeared to challenge the player in an icy location.
