Pokemon Sword and Shield - Permanent Events

Unchangeable Choices

It is important to know which features, events, and decisions cannot be changed or undone when going through the main story. Indicated below are permanent events and unchangeable decisions.

Character Name, Gender, and Skin Tone

Your name cannot be changed once you have confirmed it when starting a new game.

The gender and skin tone that you set for your character also cannot be altered after going through the character creation screen. Other features like hairstyle, hair color, eye color, and eyebrows can be changed by going to a salon.

Starter Pokemon

You will not be able to change your starter pokemon once you have selected one in the beginning of the main story. Remember to choose carefully as each starter pokemon has unique attributes, abilities, and moves.

Which Starter Pokemon Should You Choose?

Evolution Stones

You will only be able to obtain a limited number of evolution stones throughout the main story. This makes it important to decide which pokemon you will use each of them on as they cannot be farmed or duplicated.

Evolution Stone Locations

Legendary Pokemon

You will only have one chance to obtain either Zacian or Zamazenta after becoming the Galar region’s league champion. There is no way to obtain either of them if you defeat them instead of capturing them.

How to Obtain Zacian and Zamazenta

Master Ball

After completing the main story, Prof. Magnolia will give you a master ball. It has a guaranteed success when used to capture pokemon. Since you only get one during your entire playthrough, it is best to save it for catching legendary pokemon.

  1. “You will only be able to obtain a limited number of evolution stones throughout the main story. This makes it important to decide which pokemon you will use each of them on as they cannot be farmed or duplicated.”

This is false. An unlimited number of all types of evolution stones can be farmed from the Digging Brothers outside of the Wild Area Nursery. A complete set of evolution stones can also be found on the west shore of the Lake of Outrage, under the ring of monoliths, and will respawn after being picked up. This can take time, however, so the Digging Brothers are generally faster.
