Meet Galarian Ponyta
Joining the ranks of the Galarian forms is Ponyta, the unique horn Pokemon. The Ponyta in Galar are pure psychic type Pokemon. They were teased in the Pokemon Live Camera, a 24-hour livestream of Glimwood Tangle. Its release trailer, which lasts for 25 seconds, was posted yesterday, October 9th, 2019.
Exclusive to Pokemon Shield
Following Sirfetch’d’s recent reveal, The Pokemon Youtube channel released a trailer for another new face: Galarian Ponyta. This Pokemon is exclusive to Pokemon Shield.
What is Galarian Ponyta?
Unlike their Kanto forms, which are pure fire type, Galarian Ponyta is a psychic type Pokemon. According to the official website, the Ponyta in Galar are smaller than the Kanto ones. It is said that Galarian Ponyta absorbs energy from its surroundings and stores it in its mane. After absorbing energy, its mane glows different colors.
Type
Contrary to speculations on social media, Galarian Ponyta only has a single type. Admittedly, this reveal also took us by surprise, since its design somewhat suggests a Fairy type. It still makes sense given that its type is in contrast to its counterpart, Sirfetch’d. Similar has happened in previous installments. For example, in Pokemon Sun and Pokemon Moon, Sandshrew and Vulpix’s alolan forms also had opposing types, Steel running counter to Fairy.
Ability
According to the official website, some Galarian Ponyta may also be caught with the new ability, Pastel Veil. Pastel Veil protects it and its ally from poison. It also removes the poison status effect while it’s active on the field. With immunity to poison, this ability could be a decent check to certain moves like Toxic.
Moves
In the trailer, Galarian Ponyta demonstrated several of its moves. Unfortunately, there weren’t any captions to indicate what these moves are. However, judging from the animations, the moves have already been revealed in previous games. The first move, where Galarian Ponyta expelled a magical aura, could be Heal Pulse. Heal Pulse is a psychic type move that restores a target’s HP. Another move that was shown is likely Psybeam due to the noise it borrows from Generation 1. Psybeam is a psychic type special attack that deals moderate damage.
