Negotiation Overview and Guide in Persona 5 Royal
What is Negotiation?
Part and parcel of obtaining Persona is learning how to negotiate. Negotiation involves going through a conversation with an enemy shadow while in a “Hold Up.” You can invite an enemy to negotiate by selecting “Lend me your power.” Every Shadow has a personality which appears above their level and you can determine them through the lines they say when being asked. To carry out a successful negotiation requires that you match their personality with the correct responses. Match the wrong responses and the battle will resume from the enemy’s turn. If successful, you can obtain the Shadow as a Persona. Keep in mind that not all Persona can be obtained through negotiation. For example, you can’t obtain the Persona of Palace bosses or those with higher levels than yours.
Below is a list of enemy shadow personalities and their corresponding likes and dislikes.
Personality | Like | Dislike |
---|---|---|
Upbeat | Funny | Serious, Vague |
Timid | Kind | Vague, Funny |
Irritable | Serious | Vague, Kind |
Gloomy | Vague | Serious, Funny |
Other Conversations
Some enemies may also speak up even without being held at gun point. These can occur when the enemy’s allies have fallen and one is down to a sliver of health left. Other times, the Shadow starts talking when an ally is downed. When the enemy asks you to spare it, you can go through negotiation for a chance to score a new Persona. On the other hand, when the enemy has the upper hand it can extort some items from you in exchange for an ally held hostage.
In online play, if you’re in a tight spot, you can opt to ask for help from other players by calling the Thieves Guild. You have three chances to use it for every palace infiltration, so spend them wisely.
