New Persona Revealed in Persona 5 Royal
After re-watching all pre-release trailers and gameplay footage of Persona 5 Royal, we’ve decided to put a list of Persona that you can acquire in the newest release of the Persona 5. These Persona are listed in order of their appearance.
Biyarky is the first persona revealed in Persona 5 Royal. This persona’s namesake and origin is a hybrid creature from the Cthulhu Mythos.
This persona is not entirely new since it came from Persona 2: Eternal Punishment under the Devil Arcana. Based on its Persona 2 data, it is capable of releasing strong single-target and party-based physical attacks along with non-elemental attacks which are now called Almighty attacks.
Biyarky was first seen last June 5th in the Kasumi Yoshizawa character feature video. The persona was seen fighting a party of the Protagonist, Kasumi, and Morgana. The enemy persona was encountered in a new palace that looked like a mixture of an observatory tower and a concern stadium. It was knocked down by Kasumi’s persona, Cendrillon.
Macabre is a persona that originated as an enemy boss in Persona 5’s mother series, Shin Megami Tensei. The persona is inspired by a sermon text translated into a spirit or demon created by a famous Japanese illustrator, Kazuma Kaneko.
This is Macabre’s debut in the Persona series and therefore does not yet have an Arcana associated with it. However, we theorize that this persona will most likely belong to the Death Arcana since multiple Shin Megami Tensei games described it as “an evil spirit with the same name as Death.” In terms of its skills, it uses status ailments and instant death attacks.
Macabre was first seen in Ryuji Sakamato’s character feature video posted n June 27th . The persona was joined by two Biyarky facing off with a party consisting of the Protagonist, Ryuji, Haru, and Makoto at an unknown location. The persona was annihilated along with its allies by Ryuji’s third evolution persona, William.
Mishaguji is a persona that derived from an ancient Japanese deity of fertility and harvest.
This persona has already appeared in multiple Shin Megami Tensei titles, including spin-offs like the Devil Summoner series. This is not the first time for Mishaguji to appear in a persona game either. It has shown up in another persona spin-off title called Persona Q and was a part of the Hierophant Arcana. Based on other titles, Mishaguji is capable of using multiple elemental attacks, almighty attacks, buffs and debuffs, status ailments, and physical attacks.
Mishaguji was not seen in the actual game trailers but was featured in July 11th’s Morgana Report 3. Mishaguji was shown as a response to a question whether Persona 5 Royal will introduce new persona for fusion.
Cait Sith is inspired from a legendary creature or fairy from Scottish and Irish mythology.
Cait Sith is a returning persona that has appeared in multiple Shin Megami Tensei titles and spin-offs. It originally appeared as an enemy persona as far back as Revelations: Persona, known now as Persona 1. As for its attacks, it shares some resemblance to another cat-like persona, Neko Shogun. Both persona carry single-target physical attacks and party buffs. Cait Sith does not have an Arcana assignment, since the categorization of older Shin Megami Tensei titles, including Persona 1, was done by race. Also, beast-like persona such as Neko Shogun, Cerberus, and Nekomata belong to different Arcana, so it is really difficult to pinpoint.
As with Mishaguji, Cait Sith was not featured in any pre-release trailer or gameplay footage. This persona was revealed in a July 18th Famitsu article that highlighted new persona that can be acquired through negotiation or fusion.
Atavaka is a persona based on a god in Buddhist mythology. The god is a former child-eating demon turned into the protector god of Bishamonten.
Atavaka has appeared in both Persona 3 and Persona 4. Also, it appeared in the Persona Q series as well as other Shin Megami Tensei and spin-off titles. Based on its Persona 3 and Persona 4 data, its attacks include a variety of instant kills and almighty attacks. A majority of the previous titles associate Atavaka with the Chariot Arcana.
Atavaka was also revealed as a new persona that can be acquired through negotiation or fusion in the July 18th Famitsu article.
Tam Lin is based on a character in a legendary Scottish ballad. A former human turned fairy guarding the woods of Carterhaugh, England.
This persona’s appearance shares similarities with Cu Chulainn. It has already appeared in the two both Persona 3 and 4 with skills that include electric attacks, stat buffs, and physical attacks. When it comes to its arcana, it is consistently placed under the Sun Arcana in recent titles.
As with Caith Sith and Atavaka, Tam Lin was revealed in the July 18th Famitsu article that featured new updates on Persona 5 Royal.
Hastur is another persona inspired by a creature in the Cthulhu Mythos.
Hastur’s debut came in Persona 2: Eternal Punishment under the Tower Arcana. Based on its Persona 2 data, this enemy persona specializes mostly on dark attacks, which would most likely translate into curse attacks in Persona 5 Royal. In addition, Hastur’s attacks can inflict status ailments onto its enemies.
Hastur was slightly shown in Persona 5 Royal’s second official Japanese trailer, posted on August 2nd. The enemy persona was seen in the rightmost side of a battle screen where they faced a party made up of the Protagonist, Morgana, Makoto, and Kasumi.
Chimera is a beast-like persona based on Greek mythology.
This persona already came out in Persona 3 and Persona Q2 titles, belonging to the Chariot Arcana. It also bears resemblance Cerberus, with the main difference being a snake tail and a goat head. Its previous persona data highlighted that it uses fire attacks and stat debuffs.
Chimera was showcased in the Protagonist’s character feature video posted August 30th. Chimera was presented as a pair of enemy persona faced by the party.
Fafnir is based on a former god of Norse mythology who turned into a dragon due to his greed.
Apart from appearing in multiple Shin Megami Tensei titles, this persona also appeared in Persona 2: Eternal Punishment along with Biyarky and Hastur. As for its skills, Fafnir uses almighty attacks and status ailments against enemies.
Fafnir is the latest new persona announced through a tweet on the Japanese Twitter account for Persona 5 Royal.
