New and Updated Features in P5R’s Palaces
Below is a summary of new and updated features made in Persona 5 Royal’s palaces based on pre-release trailers and gameplay demos.
New Enemy Persona
New persona enemies will be arriving in Persona 5 Royal. These persona either came from previous Persona Shin Megami Tensei titles.
As of writing, there were nine new Persona revealed through trailers and gameplay demos. Apart from being encountered in palaces, they can also be gained through Persona Fusion. These new persona are the following:
Apart from the new enemy persona, some persona encountered in the palaces will have a stronger form called Kyouma.
According to Atlus, these persona variants are powerful versions of their base forms that have the ability to immediately counterattack after being damaged.
In addition to treasure chests found in the palaces, the Phantom Thieves can now acquire new items called Ishi.
Ishi were described as items that can be fused and exchanged for rare accessories. These rare accessories, when worn, enable the use of a new skill to the equipped user’s persona. However, it was not explained how it will work to Joker since he can hold up to twelve personas.
Access to Grappling Hook
In Persona 5 Royal, Joker gains access to a grappling hook that he can use to quickly travel to different places within a palace or to get up close to enemy shadows.
One way to tell when Joker can use the grappling hook is by looking at his left hand. When his idle hand glows a faint blue light, it means that a distant spot that can be interacted with the grappling hook is nearby. Press the L1 button when it appears on the screen to have Joker use the grappling hook.
Joker’s capability to use grappling hooks was already showcased in P5R’s prologue and it appears to already be usable in the Kamoshida Palace. However, it was explained that using Joker’s “Chain Wire”, an ability to catch enemy shadows from behind, would require a level 4 in Kasumi Yoshizawa’s Faith Confidant.
Improved Boss Battles
Lastly, all boss battles were revealed to be receiving improvements.
As of writing, Shadow Kamoshida, Shadow Madarame, and Shadow Okumura have been said to have received changes to their boss fight sequences. Kamoshida obtained a cognitive version of Mishima that he can use to throw multiple volleyballs at Joker’s party. Shadow Madarame gained the ability to summon four clones, each able to use a particular element in battle. Finally, Shadow Okumura is able to summon a cognitive version of his daughter, Haru, mid-battle.
