Persona 5 Royal’s Third Tier Personas
Third-tier personas are the second evolved forms of the initial personas awakened by each member of the Phantom Thieves. Based on pre-release trailers, they are formed when the owner of each persona snaps out of their respective “fabricated realities”. As a result, their previous first and second-tier persona fuse together to create the third tier persona.
The idea of third tier persona forms originated in Persona 4 Golden (P4G), an expanded version of Persona 4. In P4G, third tier forms are called “Ultimate Personas”. This term was not applied to Persona 5, since the second tier forms were already referred to that way. There is no official term yet to describe these third tier persona in P5R.
Diego
Diego is Morgana’s third tier persona, belonging to the Magician Arcana.
Diego’s base model is similar to Morgana’s initial persona, Zorro. The persona is named after “Don Diego de la Vega”, a fictional character behind the masked outlaw, Zorro. Diego’s design is representative of a Spanish nobleman.
Diego was revealed in Morgana’s character feature video. The persona showcases a new attack called Miracle Rush, a multi-target version of Miracle Punch.
William
Ryuji Sakamoto’s third tier persona is named William representing the Chariot Arcana.
William is derived from “William Kidd”, the real name of the 17th-century Scottish privateer turned pirate and outlaw. The persona’s model looks reminiscent of Ryuji’s initial persona, Captain Kidd. Now, it has a modernized look with a suit-themed hoodie jacket, goggles, and headphones. Instead of standing over a ship, the new persona stands on a sailboat.
In the Ryuji character feature video, William was seen using a multi-target physical attack called Agneyastra to defeat enemy shadows.
Celestine
Celestine is Ann Takamaki’s third tier persona under the Lovers Arcana.
The persona’s base model is similar to the Ann’s initial persona, Carmen. The persona’s namesake is “Célestine Galli-Marié”, a female French mezzo-soprano famous for her portrayal of the titular lead in the opera Carmen.
Celestine was unveiled in the July 18th issue of Famitsu Magazine wearing a modern glam punk outfit. The new persona replaced her old cigar with bubblegum and her men in suits with thugs or backup dancers.
Gorokichi
Representing the Emperor Arcana, Yusuke Kitagawa’s new third tier persona is called Gorokichi.
Gorokichi is a name attributed to the younger Ishikawa Goemon, a thief who stole from the rich and gave his spoils to the poor. It bears resemblance to Yusuke’s initial persona, Goemon.
Gorokichi was also shown in the July 18th issue of Famitsu Magazine. In terms of appearance, Gorokichi appears to be a stereotypical mob boss, trading his gown and old-fashioned pipe for a fur coat and massive cigar.
Agnes
Makoto Niijima’s new third tier persona is called Agnes. The new persona still assigned under the Priestess Arcana.
The name Agnes was picked from the real name of a legendary pope, Johanna or Joan. During the medieval times in Europe, Johanna ascended to the papacy while pretending to be a man. Her reign was short lived when that church found out that she was a woman.
Makoto’s third tier persona was announced in Famitsu Magazine’s August 8th issue. The new persona returns looking like a drag racing motorcycle.
Al Azif
Al Azif is Futaba Sakura’s new third tier persona epitomizing the Hermit Arcana.
Al Azif is the original Arabic term for the fictional magic tome of forbidden knowledge, the Necronomicon. The tome is mentioned in a short story, The Hound, written by H.P. Lovecraft.
Al Azif’s model is entirely new and is reminiscent of an Aztec pyramid. The persona was presented in Famitsu Magazine’s August 8th issue.
Lucy
The last unveiled third-tier persona is Lucy. This new persona belongs to Haru Okumura and is a part of the Empress Arcana.
Lucy’s model is based on Haru’s initial persona, Milady. The name of the new third tier persona is based on “Lucy Hay”, an English Courtier involved in multiple political intrigues during the English Civil War. Lucy replaces her mask with sunglasses, her fan with a suitcase, and her pink dress with a trench coat.
As of writing, Lucy is the last third-tier persona revealed prior to the release of Persona 5 Royal. She was also shown together with Agnes and Al Azif in Famitsu Magazine’s August 8th issue.
