In Tokyo Game Show 2019, Atlus Japan showed off Persona 5 Royal’s new prologue through a livestream. New features have been added to the title such as visual improvements, new gameplay mechanics, and narrative changes. Below is a list of notable things we’ve noticed through the prologue sequence.

New Shaded Character Portraits

At the start of the prologue, we saw the new Phantom Thief character portraits. The inclusion of the portraits helped in visualizing who was communicating with the Protagonist. Though at this time in the story, the character portraits were shaded black.

Dark Border Added When Taking Cover

The next thing we discovered was simple and subtle. While the Protagonist was hiding, we could see the edges of the screen go dark. This new feature made sense, since Joker would definitely have limited vision while in stealth mode.

Grappling Hook

Another new feature was Joker’s grappling hook. In Persona 5, Joker waited for the enemy shadow to run away before proceeding toward the staircase. In the expansion, Joker used his grappling hook to quickly jump to an upper floor that would later prompt an exciting sequence.

Kasumi Teased as a New Party Member

After landing on the upper floor, Joker was met by six shadows. While surrounded, Kasumi arrived and quickly eliminated three of them. Then, a battle commenced with the Protagonist and Kasumi fighting as a duo to get rid of the remaining shadows.

What we picked up from the second prologue battle was how strong Kasumi was. She was targeted earlier with a wind attack called Magaru but she dodged it. Then, she quickly eliminated two Ose’s and a Jatayu with her Cendrillon. Her Cendrillon used a Vorpal Blade, which is a “severe” level multi-target physical attack.

All-Out Attack Portraits Removed

Since all of their attacks struck critically, they got a chance to perform an All-Out Attack. However, we observed that the All-Out Attack character portraits were missing. This might imply that Kasumi, despite being a Persona user, was still not yet on board with the Phantom Thieves. This narrative was implied briefly in P5R’s teaser trailer. She may have entered the palace and rescued the Protagonist for another reason that is currently unknown.
