Ame no Uzume

Ame no Uzume is famous in Shintoism as the goddess that drew out the Amaterasu from her hiding place. She is the goddess of the dawn, mirth, and revelry. Even if she is not one of the primordial deities, she still has her importance. Wife of Sarutahiko Ōkami, though she does not take the meek position of a wife as a god normally does.

In mythology, Susano-o tore through the world and sent a flayed horse falling through Amaterasu’s roof. When the horse fell in, all the sun goddess’ maidens were spooked at the sight. Furious, Amaterasu stormed off and hid in a cave. As she hid in the cave, darkness fell over Japan and not a single god could draw her out. However, Ame no Uzume cleverly overturned a tub and performed a strip-tease in front of the gods. This caused so much of a commotion that the gods began to laugh. Amaterasu peered out to see what the commotion was about before being drawn out further by a mirror that Ame no Uzume placed before her performance.

Her plan soon worked and the other gods managed to catch Amaterasu before pleading the sun goddess return as the sun.
