Ganesha

The story of Ganesha is rather sad. He is the son of the Destroyer, Shiva, and the mother goddess Parvati. When Parvati longed for a child, Shiva grabbed a bundle from her dress, ripped it off, and gave it form. After Parvati caressed the bundle with a lotus leaf, Ganesha was born. There are several stories as to how Ganesha ended up with the head of an elephant. In some, he was born with the head. In others, Shiva cut his former head off in a fit of rage when Ganesha denied the Destroyer entry to see a bathing Parvait. Shiva replaced Ganesha’s head with one of an elephant after Parvati discovered what had happened In another still, his head was burned off at a dinner party when seen by Shani’s evil eye. Brahma allowed Ganesha to live if his head was replaced with that of the first animal found after the incident.

Ganesha has other names, such as Ganapati or Vinakaya. He is one of the best-known and most worshiped deities in the Hindu pantheon. Many countries around the world like India, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Nepal worship him. Devotion to him widely diverges between Jains and Buddhists. People revere him as the remover of obstacles and patron of the arts and sciences. Also, he is known as the deva of intellect and wisdom.
