Nue

Nue is a creature from Japanese mythology. It has the head of a monkey, the limbs of a tiger, the body of a raccoon dog, and a snake for a tail. The Nue is known to unleash lightning blasts that can tear through cities and villages. Sometimes, powerful onmyouji mages can summon a Nue as a familiar.

Based on the Tale of Heike, Emperor Konoe became sick after having terrible nightmares every night. As the nightmares struck, a dark cloud appeared at two o’ clock in the morning. It floated above the roof of the palace in Kyoto during the summer of 1153. However, this disappeared when samurai Minamoto no Yorimasa staked-out the roof one night. Upon seeing the cloud, he fired an arrow at it. With that, a dead Nue fell out of the cloud. Yorimasu buried the body in the sea of Japan.
