Yurlungur

Yurlungur is a large snake from Australian Aboriginal mythology. Yurlungur is a copper snake who is awakened from a deep sleep. He is awakened when he picks up the scent of a woman’s menstrual blood. Driven mad from the scent, the serpent devoured the women and her sisters.

However, he eventually vomited them out. He was told to spit the women out after meeting with some other snakes. In Australian Aboriginal ceremonies, vomiting means that boys are about to enter manhood. However, he also has other meanings. Many say that when he appears, rains will come and bring about the renewal of life. When Yurlungur returns to his home, the water turns rainbow. As such, he is also known as the Rainbow Serpent.
