Black Maria is portrayed as the Virgin Mary with dark skin. They are possibly a product of pre-Christian deity traditions. Their skin tone is attributed to the image of the goddess at the time and the color of the soil. These statues might have been inspired by goddesses like Isis and Cybele.

Some believe that the image of Black Maria accentuates the qualities that were not apparent in her counterpart, the Virgin Mary. Some of the traits include feminine power which was likely silenced back when the medieval Christian Church held influence. Black Maria’s model is derived from “The Idol of Perversity” by Belgian symbolist painter Jean Delville. Her other names are Black Mary and Black Madonna.

Maria is the Faith Arcana’s ultimate form.
