Ananta

Conceived from the mouth of the lying Balarama, Ananta consumed everything with the exception of the head of Balarama. His name in Sanskrit translates to ‘infinite.’ He is sometimes known as Shesha. According to Hindu myth, he rules over all Nagas.

Usually portrayed as a giant coiled serpent, he bears between five to a thousand heads. These may or may not have an ornate crown decorated for each. Each head is capable of expelling venom and breathing fire.

The primary deity Vishnu nestles on Ananta. It is a common sight to witness each of Shesha’s heads chanting hymns of praise to Vishnu.

There are several accounts of Shesha, one of them portray his battle against the devas to which only the brave wind deity Vayu agreed. Shesha intertwined with a towering hill and challenged Vayu to make the hill crumble. Vayu summoned powerful lightning to strike down upon it, but Shesha absorbed the storms with its gaping mouth. Vayu lost the challenge and was engulfed by the serpent, which consequently took the breath out of the living.

Fortunately Vishnu intervened and let Vayu go. Shesha obeyed the deity, causing the hill to topple into pieces.
