Chernobog

A deity whose accounts are hazy due to an absence of a Slavic formal writing system at the time of his mythology. Chernobog gained notoriety only during the 12th century, making him outdated in comparison to other dieties.

Known in Slavic as the god of death, his name translates to ‘Black god.’ He fought against Belobog, the god of light, but lost. As a consequence, he was sent down to earth and became known as the spirit of evil.

His influences depicted destruction, darkness, and the cold winter. As a result of his portrayal, potential followers compared him to Baba Yaga, who they refused to worship. Since his image was not accepted among the customs, he was cast as a portent of evil. This was uncommon for images seen as “deities.” This failure for him to be accepted among the upper echelon of deities has made Chernobog’s image equivalent to that of the devil.
