Hinduism portrays the Garuda as a lesser Hindu divinity. Usually, he serves Vishnu as a mount. Garuda normally has a golden body with a white face, red wings, and an eagle’s beak. He has a strong man’s body. The Garuda can appear somewhat humanoid and wears a crown on his head. As one of the ancient beings, he is massive in size and can block out the sun.
Buddhism portrays Garuda as enormous predatory birds with intelligence and social organization. Like the Nagas, they are humanoid in appearance. They have the characteristics of animals and divine beings but are considered to be lower ranked Deva. In Japan, they are called Karura.
