Jatayu

Portrayed in legends as the king of birds. According to the Hindu Ramayana, the vulture Jatayu is a companion of Rama. When he went to save Rama’s wife Sita, he encountered the devil-king Ravana. He put up a good fight at first, but Jatayu’s wings were severed and he suffered a fatal wound. Another account comes from Malay Literature, Hikayat Merong Mahawangsa, where he is Garuda’s nephew. He was sent by the King to retrieve the princess from Garuda. However, similar to in the Ramayana, Jataya was no match against the captor.
