Quetzalcoatl

Quetzalcoatl is Aztec in origin. His name comes from the Nahuatl language, meaning “feathered serpent.” Quetzalcoatl’s brother tricked him by using a mirror to tempt him. When Quetzalcoatl saw himself, he was terrified by his own appearance. With that, he hid until his adviser, Xolotl, made a suit for him. However, it was in the suit that his brother tricked him into making love with Quetzalpetal, their sister. When the deity realized this, he resolved to die. After he buried himself, he soon rose again to teach man how to farm among other things.

When he left, Quetzalcoatl sailed away on top of snakes. He said he’d return when the time of Man comes. Quetzalcoatl is considered one of the most important gods, along with Tlaloc, Tezcatlipoca, and Huitzilopochtli.
