Suzaku is worshiped as the deity of the south, one of the four guardians of Chinese constellations. It represents the south, the summer, and the element fire. Many people associate the color red to Suzaku due to its associations with heat and fire.
According to Wu Xing, Suzaku represents Fire in the Taoist Five-Elemental system. Because of its popularity, its names may not seem familiar. When in China, Suzaku is referred to as Zhu Que. Japan refers to the Vermillion Bird as Suzaku, Koreans know it as Jujak, and its name is Chu Tước in Vietnamese. Legends describe Suzaku as a bird that resembles a pheasant with five colored plumage and is perpetually covered in flames. This depiction is seen in Jonangu Shrine at the southern part of Kyoto.
This deity is often mistaken for Feng Huang. However, Feng Huang is considered the legendary ruler of birds and is associated with the Chinese Empress. Suzaku is of more mythical origin.
